Empowering skies: Women soar to new heights in Indian Aviation

In India, women have been making significant strides in the field of aviation, although their representation in certain roles remains relatively low compared to men. Despite this, there are several notable examples of Indian women achieving success and breaking barriers in aviation.

One prominent figure is Captain Durba Banerjee, who became the first female pilot in India in 1956. Her accomplishment paved the way for other women to pursue careers as commercial pilots.
In recent years, women in India have continued to make advancements in aviation. For example, Captain Nivedita Bhasin became the country’s first female Airbus commander in 2013, flying for Air India.

Furthermore, organizations like the Indian Women Pilots’ Association (IWPA) and the Women in Aviation International – India Chapter (WAI-India) have been working to support and empower women in the aviation industry through networking, mentorship, and advocacy initiatives.
While progress has been made, there are still challenges such as gender bias and cultural norms that can hinder women’s participation in certain aviation roles. However, with the dedication and determination of women in the industry, coupled with ongoing efforts to promote gender diversity, the future looks promising for women in aviation in India.
