Don’t ignore these symptoms, they could signal a nutrient deficiency

NEW DELHI: Minerals aren’t just another health buzzword — they’re essential building blocks that keep your body running smoothly, from your immune system to your bones, hormones and muscles. But because early signs of mineral deficiencies can be subtle, many women shrug them off as “stress”, aging or just a normal part of life. According to experts, that’s a mistake. Ignoring these signs can allow a small imbalance to snowball into bigger health issues over time. Dr Sangeetha Sharma, Lead Consultant in Obstetrics & Gynaecology at Dharmshila Hospital, explains that minerals play a vital role in women’s overall health, hormonal balance and reproductive wellbeing. Yet many common deficiency symptoms — like fatigue, cramps or headaches — are mistakenly attributed to busyness or low mood, rather than signaling that your body needs something it isn’t getting.

Here’s what to watch out for:

  • Sodium deficiency can show up as frequent headaches, nausea, muscle cramps, low blood pressure and dizziness — especially in women who sweat heavily, follow very low-salt diets, or drink excessive fluids.

  • Magnesium deficiency often causes fatigue, muscle cramps, poor sleep, anxiety, headaches and even irregular periods. Because magnesium is involved in nerve function and muscle relaxation, its shortfall can also worsen premenstrual symptoms and mood changes.

  • Potassium deficiency may lead to muscle weakness, leg cramps, constipation, heart palpitations and low energy — problems that are often blamed on stress or lack of sleep rather than a mineral gap.

  • Calcium deficiency is common in women and can manifest as bone pain, back pain, weak nails, frequent fractures, dental issues and muscle spasms — early indicators of weakening bone health that shouldn’t be dismissed as “just getting older”.

  • Zinc deficiency shows up as frequent infections, hair fall, delayed wound healing, acne, loss of taste or smell and menstrual irregularities. Because zinc influences immunity and skin health, its shortfall can affect fertility and overall wellbeing.

  • Iron deficiency — especially common due to menstruation and pregnancy — presents with constant tiredness, pale skin, breathlessness, hair loss, dizziness and poor concentration. Many women live with low iron for years, mistaking chronic fatigue for stress or lack of sleep.

  • Selenium deficiency may cause weak immunity, hair thinning, muscle pain and fatigue, and is often overlooked as “just tiredness”.

  • Copper deficiency can lead to anemia that doesn’t improve with iron supplements, numbness, weak immunity, bone weakness and early greying of hair — a cluster of symptoms that might be misread as unrelated issues.

What all these have in common is that they start with signals your body already sends, but signals are easy to miss. If symptoms persist, healthcare professionals recommend getting a proper evaluation and blood tests to identify specific deficiencies — because early diagnosis and balanced nutrition can prevent long-term complications.

Experts also stress that a nutritious, balanced diet rich in fruits, vegetables, dairy, whole grains, nuts and seeds usually suffices for most minerals. But when diet alone isn’t enough, or symptoms are pronounced, consulting a doctor is the safest course of action.
