A 22-year-old woman was apprehended by the police in connection with the abandonment of her newborn baby girl in a dustbin outside Sion Hospital in Mumbai last week, resulting in the infant’s tragic death.
The arrest has been made under IPC Section 317, which deals with the exposure and abandonment of a child under 12 years by a parent or guardian. Additionally, Section 315, related to actions intended to prevent a child from being born alive or causing its death after birth, has been invoked.
The police are also contemplating the possibility of adding a murder charge against the woman.
Currently, investigators are in the process of questioning the woman to comprehend the motive behind her actions. She has acknowledged that the child was born out of wedlock, revealing that she gave birth inside the hospital toilet before disposing of the baby from the second floor, resulting in fatal head injuries.
The woman is scheduled to appear in court on Monday to face the charges.
