An explosion occurred at a wholesale facility on 15 Mile near Groesbeck Highway in Clinton Township, causing multiple buildings to catch fire. The incident, involving Select Distributors, occurred around 9 p.m., prompting authorities to advise the public to steer clear of the area.
Preliminary information from the police indicates that Select Distributors, a seller of nitrogen tanks, was the source of the fire, resulting in rapid explosions. Injuries are currently unknown.
Residents in nearby areas, including Mount Clemens and Sterling Heights, reported hearing consecutive loud explosions that shook their homes. Concerns about air quality have arisen due to falling debris, with authorities urging those in proximity to stay indoors.
Clinton Township Supervisor Bob Cannon emphasized the importance of residents staying away and in their homes as ashes were blowing. The affected cities’ air quality will be assessed on Tuesday morning.
The fire, visible from miles away, prompted first responders to remain at the scene, working to extinguish the flames. Traffic control is in place, and as of 11 p.m., the fire is gradually subsiding.
Witness Christian described the chaotic scene, with people fleeing the area due to the explosive nature of the incident. DTE crews are taking precautions by shutting down power along Groesbeck Highway to prevent further damage.
Select Distributors LLC, the wholesale supplier involved, specializes in vapes, CBD products, hookahs, lighters, and more. The incident is ongoing, and a shooting reportedly occurred in the vicinity shortly after the explosions, though it remains unclear if the two incidents are related. Authorities have arrested an individual with a handgun near the scene, according to Macomb County Executive Mark Hackel.
