Iran’s President Ebrahim Raisi recently perished in a helicopter crash, an event that has triggered a political crisis and instability within the nation.

So according to the Iranian constitution, what will happen, if a president becomes incapacitated or dies in office. Here is the below outline: –

Under section 131 of the Islamic republic of Iran, the vice-president (currently Mohammad Mokhber) will take the responsibility, backed by the confirmation of the supreme leader. Who has final say in all matters related to Iran.

Later, a council comprising of first vice president, speaker of the parliament and the head of the judiciary must conduct an election within period of maximum 50 days.

However, what’s notable is, that presidential election in Iran has due in the year 2025, as Raisi was elected in 2021.

Coincidentally, according to the constitution, the election is expected to be conducted in July.
