In a major operation, the Excise department officials in West Bengal’s Siliguri seized a significant quantity of non-duty paid liquor on Wednesday. The seizure took place during a routine vehicle check carried out by the Jalpaiguri Excise Division.

Vehicle Intercepted with Illegal Liquor

The officers intercepted a vehicle coming from the Ghoom area of Darjeeling. During a thorough inspection, the officials discovered a large stash of non-duty-paid liquor loaded at the back of the van. Two individuals, both residents of Bijanbari in Darjeeling, were arrested for illegal transportation.

Details of the Seizure

According to Sujit Das, Special Commissioner of Excise, Preventive, Jalpaiguri division, the excise team confiscated 121 cases of beer, amounting to approximately 950 liters, 11 cases of whisky (100 liters), and 14 cases of rum (130 liters). The officials also seized the vehicle used for the smuggling operation.

Sujit Das provided more details about the operation, saying, “We had received intelligence that a vehicle loaded with non-duty paid liquor was set to enter West Bengal. We set up a watch duty near Ghoom last night, and early this morning, after a hot chase, we intercepted the vehicle near the Makaibari tea estate area. During the search, we uncovered a large quantity of smuggled liquor.”

Increased Vigilance Ahead of Durga Puja

With the upcoming Durga Puja festival, the Excise Department has intensified its efforts to curb illegal activities. “We have strengthened checkpoints and surprise watch duties in various locations, reinforcing our network to combat illegal liquor operations during the festive season,” added Sujit Das.
