The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has forecasted the likelihood of thunderstorms accompanied by rainfall in Mumbai and its adjoining districts over the upcoming weekend. A yellow alert has been issued for the maximum city, along with Thane, Palghar, Raigad, and Ratnagiri districts, signaling the need for precautionary measures.
According to the IMD’s five-day forecast released on Wednesday, Mumbai, along with the neighboring districts of Palghar and Thane, is anticipated to experience moderate to heavy rainfall, accompanied by thunderstorms and gusty winds between November 25 and 26. The forecast extends to Ratnagiri and Sindhudurg as well, with a yellow alert in effect from November 23 to November 26.
Sunil Kamble, director of IMD Mumbai, explained that a trough has formed along the Bay of Bengal coast, leading to expected rainfall activities. This trough is progressing towards the Maharashtra coastline, potentially resulting in precipitation across several coastal districts. Weather officials also suggested that the anticipated rainfall could contribute to improved air quality in the coming days.
As of Wednesday, Mumbai’s overall Air Quality Index (AQI) stood at 126. Among the 26 monitoring stations, only Shivaji Nagar reported a poor AQI of 217, while the remaining stations recorded readings ranging from moderate to satisfactory. Notably, Borivali registered the best AQI at 82, followed by 90 in Colaba and 96 in Powai. Residents are advised to stay informed about the weather updates and take necessary precautions during the expected weather conditions over the weekend.
