With the acceleration of urbanization today, the traffic situation in major Asian cities has become increasingly challenging

ABD reports that developing Asia will need to invest about $1.7 trillion annually until 2030 to sustain its growth, with more than 30% of it focused on building transport infrastructure

Early this year, the TomTom Traffic Index, in its annual report, provided data and information on traffic trends in 387 cities in 55 countries throughout 2023

The report highlighted a decline in average speeds in most cities, with about 82 global cities seeing their average speed remain unchanged 

London and Dublin have emerged as the cities with the worst traffic congestion globally, with average travel times of 37 minutes and 20 seconds

Not so surprisingly, India’s Silicon Valley, Bengaluru, holds the title of Asia’s most congested city with 55 minutes and 51 seconds of travel time per day

Taiwan is home to five cities that rank among the top 50 most congested cities in the world

Taichung holds the 11th position, with an average travel time of 26 minutes and 50 seconds for a 10-km journey

Meanwhile, Japan features prominently as well, with Sapporo ranked 14th at an average of 26 minutes and 30 seconds

Followed by Nagoya at 25th with an average of 24 minutes and 20 seconds

Where do cosmopolitan Indian cities rank?

Bengaluru, and not Mumbai, holds the title of India’s most congested city, ranking sixth globally according to the 2023 index

The average travel time for a 10-kilometre journey in Bengaluru is 28 minutes and 10 seconds

Pune follows closely behind, with an average travel time of 27 minutes and 50 seconds for the same distance

In the top 20, New Delhi and Mumbai also made the list, ranking 12th and 14th across Asia, respectively

New Delhi, the capital city of India, recorded an average travel time of 21 minutes and 40 seconds for a 10-kilometre journey

Conversely, Mumbai has experienced an increase in travel time compared to last year, with an average travel time for a 10-kilometre journey
