Partap Singh Bajwa, leader of the opposition in the Punjab legislative assembly, declared on Friday that they would battle the AAP party’s vendetta both legally and on the streets after being denied the opportunity to see Congress MLA Sukhpal Khaira in Fazilka.
Workers for the Congress who wanted to meet Khaira gathered outside the Fazilka CIA office under the leadership of Partap Singh Bajwa and Punjab party leader Amarinder Singh Raja Warring.
“Today, I traveled to Fazilka with the senior leadership of the Punjab Congress to meet with our MLA, Sukhpal Khaira. We couldn’t meet him because of the police. We’ll pursue legal action against the AAP party and take the battle to the streets. Such coercive measures won’t succeed in scaring us off, Bajwa wrote on X (formerly Twitter).
He further condemned the Punjab police and Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann and said that the Congress has not seen this kind of situation in Punjab.
“I want to condemn Bhawant Mann’s action. Mann thinks he will be in the government forever but he is wrong everyone has to go and his government will also go,” he said while speaking to reporters outside Sardar police station.
“As I am the Leader of the Opposition it is our constitutional right to meet Khaira. We were supposed to meet him in the custody of the police officials but they didn’t allow us. It was a courtesy call and wanted to tell him that the Congress party and each and every leader of the party is with him, nothing more than this,” he said.
He continued by saying that the leaders of the Congress are planning a dharna in Bathinda to protest the arrest. Amarinder Singh Raja Warring, the head of the Punjab unit, stated on Friday that we would fight until the bitter end. “Sukhpal Singh Khaira is being brought into an old case as part of political vendetta. Khaira will be the first person we encounter, and it will be up to us to determine what to do after that. Warring, the head of the Punjab
Congress, told reporters that this was being done as retaliation. In connection with a 2015 drug smuggling case, Khaira was detained at his home earlier on Thursday and later committed to a two-day police remand by Fazlika’s Jalalabad court. Khaira has been placed in police prison until September 30 by Fazlika’s Jalalabad court.
