The Cauvery Water regulatory Committee has asked us to release 5,000 cusecs of water to Tamil Nadu every day. But we have clearly said that we do not have water, said Deputy Chief Minister DK Shivakumar.
Responding to the media after the order of the Cauvery Water regulatory Committee, he said, “There may be a meeting of the Cauvery Irrigation Authority on Wednesday or Thursday where we will make our stand clear. I and the Chief Minister discussed and came to the conclusion that there is no reason to release the water,” he said.
“The people of Tamil Nadu had demanded 12 thousand cusecs. They have reduced it to 5 thousand cusecs. First we will give priority to drinking water and then we will think about giving it to the farmers. There was hope when it rained in Bengaluru, but now we are suffering because there is no rain,” he said.
“We submitted an affidavit to the Supreme Court, and they told both the states that we will not intervene. We have informed every one of the facts. I will speak to our legal experts in Delhi. We are not doing anything covertly. We have told them to visit the state and see our situation,” he said.
On the question of whether Cauvery water issue is being politicized, “It is wrong to accuse the judges and senior officials in the committee. I will not say much about the opposition party, I ask you to cooperate. We believe that people will support us,” he said.
