A YouTuber’s recent interview with food delivery agents in Bengaluru has highlighted a surprising disparity in earnings between these workers and IT engineers. Loveena Kamath, the creator behind the Full Disclosure YouTube channel, shared her findings that delivery agents for Swiggy and Zomato in the IT hub of India are making more than the average IT professional.
Kamath spoke with Shiva, a 22-year-old Swiggy delivery driver who has been in the job for three years. Shiva reported earnings between ₹40,000 to ₹50,000 per month, which is more than double the average monthly salary of ₹20,000 for IT engineers in India. His income is bolstered by a base pay of ₹20 per order, along with tips and incentives, totaling around ₹5,000 monthly from tips alone. Shiva has managed to save ₹2 lakh over the past six months, planning to invest it in opening a D-Mart in his village to create local jobs.
Kamath also interviewed Taiyappa, a Zomato delivery agent with three years of experience, who confirmed earning close to ₹40,000 per month. Despite the impressive figures, Kamath noted that many delivery partners view the job as a temporary means to a better future rather than a long-term career. The demanding work schedule, with shifts spanning 12 to 13 hours a day, reflects the high earnings.
The revelations have sparked varied reactions on social media. Some users were astonished by the earnings of delivery agents, while others highlighted the different career trajectories between delivery work and IT professions. In an interesting note, another Instagram user shared that a Zomato rider who worked relentlessly made ₹70,000 in a month, earning a laptop and an electric scooter from the company as a reward for his dedication.
