The parents and relatives of a 31-year-old trainee doctor, who was tragically raped and murdered at Kolkata’s RG Kar Medical College and Hospital, have recounted their devastating experience following the news of her death on August 9.
In an interview with India Today’s Lallantop, the father of the victim revealed his suspicions arose immediately when he started receiving calls from the hospital. He recalled, “I knew something had happened to my daughter,” after being informed by hospital staff that “your daughter has died by suicide. Come immediately.” The semi-naked body of the doctor was discovered in a seminar hall at the state-run RG Kar Hospital that Friday morning.
Initially, the Kolkata Police suspected suicide but later revised their statement as further investigation revealed the true nature of the crime.
Three-Hour Wait and Disturbing Discoveries
Upon hearing the tragic news, the victim’s parents, a nearby relative, and an acquaintance rushed to the hospital, only to be kept waiting for three hours. A relative described the distressing scene, saying, “I heard her (the mother) cry aloud. When I arrived, she hugged me and cried that everything is over. She recounted receiving a call from the hospital stating her daughter had died by suicide.”
Despite their pleas, the family was not permitted to see the body immediately. The relative added, “When we were finally allowed to enter the seminar hall, we were told we could only take a picture. The father showed me the photo, and it was horrifying—her legs were spread apart at a 90-degree angle, indicating severe physical trauma.”
Autopsy Reveals Brutal Details
The post-mortem report, a chilling document spanning four pages, revealed severe injuries consistent with “perverted sexuality” and “genital torture.” It noted that the doctor’s thyroid cartilage had been broken from strangling, and there were multiple injuries to her belly, lips, fingers, and left leg. The report also detailed that her spectacles were shattered, with glass shards penetrating her eyes.
“The report indicated bleeding from both her eyes and mouth, as well as injuries to her private parts and other areas,” the relative explained. The time of death was estimated between 3 am and 5 am on Friday. The doctor had been on night duty on August 8 and, after completing her rounds, had rested in the seminar hall around 2 am.
Calls for Justice
In response to the horrific details, BJP spokesperson Shehzad Poonawalla and Shiv Sena (UBT) MP Priyanka Chaturvedi have called for justice. Poonawalla shared the family’s ordeal on X, emphasizing, “The chilling details of brutality… Never forget. Never forgive.” Chaturvedi echoed these sentiments, urging that the accused be punished severely and that the cover-up of the crime as a suicide be addressed.
The case has now been transferred to the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI), with Sanjoy Roy, the accused, arrested on Saturday. Roy, who was an outsider frequently visiting the hospital, has been charged with the brutal assault and murder of the trainee doctor.
