In response to passenger concerns regarding the hygiene of blankets provided in air-conditioned coaches, Indian Railways has implemented significant changes to its linen maintenance protocols. Previously, blankets were washed once every three months, a practice that was revised in 2010 to a monthly cleaning schedule. However, recent developments have prompted further enhancements.

Union Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw informed the Lok Sabha that blankets are now washed at least once a month. Additionally, passengers receive an extra bedsheet in their bedroll kits to use as a blanket cover, ensuring improved hygiene during their journey.
In a proactive move, Northern Railway has introduced ultraviolet (UV) ray technology to disinfect blankets. This pilot project is currently operational on the Ranchi Rajdhani and Jammu Rajdhani trains, utilizing robotic technology to ensure linens are effectively sanitized after each use. Northern Railway’s Chief Public Relations Officer, Himanshu Shekhar, noted that this initiative is yielding positive results in terms of hygiene and passenger comfort.
These measures reflect Indian Railways’ commitment to enhancing passenger comfort and safety by adopting modern technologies and more rigorous cleaning schedules. The organization continues to explore and implement strategies to maintain high standards of hygiene across its services.
