In what could be described as a medical miracle, doctors at the Government General Hospital (GGH) in Andhra Pradesh’s Kakinada performed an awake craniotomy-the most complicated procedure-on a patient as he screened a movie starring Jr. NTR. Awake craniotomy is a surgical procedure where the patient remains awake throughout the procedure.

A. Ananthalakshmi was a 55-year-old patient who was actually undergoing treatment for a brain tumor on the left side of her brain. She complained of numbness in her limbs and frequent headaches. She was diagnosed with a 3.3 x 2.7 cm tumor and opted for the government hospital because private ones were far too expensive.
To keep Ananthalakshmi in a calm and focused mood during the surgery, the doctors played scenes from her favorite film, Jr NTR’s *Adhurs*. This brought comfort to her and made the two-and-half-hour procedure a smooth one. The doctors were successful in removing the tumor and expected Ananthalakshmi would be able to head home within five days.
Awake craniotomy, also referred to as awake brain surgery, was first used in the management of epilepsy and is now widely applied in tumor resection. It is because this method allows neurosurgeons to resect a tumor maximally with preservation of vital neurological functions due to the fact that the patient is kept awake during surgery.
Recently, a similar surgery was performed on 56-year-old patient at Kalyan Singh Cancer Institute in Uttar Pradesh. He was kept engaged with his mobile phone during the surgery to minimize the chances of nerve damage. In early 2019, a five-year-old girl underwent an awake craniotomy surgery at AIIMS Delhi for removing the dangerous tumor found in her brain. She spoke to doctors and identified a picture of Prime Minister Narendra Modi.
