An associate of Waris Punjab De’s leader Amritpal Singh, Gurpreet Singh, was remanded to three days of police custody by an Amritsar court on Friday. Punjab Police apprehended Gurpreet Singh in connection with an 11-month-old case registered on February 16, 2023, alleging his involvement in the purported kidnapping of Varinder Singh. Amritpal Singh is a co-accused in this case.

Gurpreet Singh was apprehended at New Delhi’s railway station while returning from Takht Hazur Sahib in Nanded, Maharashtra, along with Amritpal Singh’s parents and other supporters.

The FIR was lodged based on Varinder Singh’s complaint from Salempur village in Ropar district, alleging he was abducted and assaulted by Amritpal Singh’s associates at Damdami Taksal Ajnala faction’s headquarters, led by Amreek Singh Ajnala. The incident allegedly occurred on February 15, 2023.

According to the complaint, Varinder Singh was taken from the headquarters to Jallupur Khera village, where Amritpal Singh operated his organization, and was assaulted. Varinder Singh claimed he was subsequently transported to Amritsar, where he sought medical treatment after being allegedly assaulted and robbed of two phones by Amritpal Singh’s group.

During Gurpreet Singh’s arrest, the police stated in writing that no items were seized from him. Additionally, Paramjit Singh Sarna, the President of Shiromani Akali Dal (Badal) Delhi unit, arrived at the railway station upon learning about the Punjab Police’s presence to apprehend Gurpreet Singh.
