Russia said on Sunday that Ukrainian forces had launched a counter-attack in the Kursk region, a western Russian area where Russian troops have been trying to dislodge Ukrainian forces for the past five months.
On August 6, Ukrainian troops, according to Russia’s defense ministry, crossed into the country from Ukraine in an unexpected incursion, taking and holding a key area that might be critical for future peace negotiations.
According to the ministry, around 9:00 a.m. Moscow time, the Ukrainian troops launched a counterattack near the village of Berdin with two tanks, a mine-clearing vehicle, and twelve armored combat vehicles carrying paratroopers.
According to Russian media, the attack was thwarted by Russian artillery and air support. The two attacks of Ukrainian forces were also repelled.
Russian war bloggers, who have cheered on Moscow’s war but frequently denounce its setbacks, said Ukrainian forces had forced Russian troops to go on the defensive. The Operativnye Svodki channel observed artillery and small-arms battles were continuing with Ukraine using Western-armored vehicles to put in infantry.
Fighting is concentrated north of the highway connecting Sudzha to Kursk. Prominent blogger Yuri Podolyak suggested the Ukrainian assault may be a diversion for a possible strike on Glushkovo and urged the residents of Glushkovo and Korenevo to leave the area.
