Five civilians were killed in eastern Ukraine’s Donetsk province on Friday as Russian troops pressed their assault, local prosecutors stated.
A local resident died in the city of Pokrovsk, a focal point in Russia’s drive west through Donetsk, the Donetsk regional prosecutor’s office said. Two others died in villages around Kostyantynivka and one in a village outside Kurakhove. Russia took control of Kurakhove in January, its military said.
Moscow’s troops have been advancing slowly but surely in Donetsk as part of their larger goal to take over the whole Donbas region, including Donetsk and Luhansk. Ukrainian authorities continue to issue warnings of intensifying attacks as fighting in the area increases.
