US Secretary of State Marco Rubio on Thursday said that Gaza is currently uninhabitable due to severe destruction and the presence of unexploded weapons. Speaking during his visit to the Dominican Republic, Rubio stressed the urgent need for international efforts to rebuild Gaza.
“I think that’s just a realistic reality, that in order to fix a place like that, people are going to have to live somewhere else in the interim,” Rubio stated.
Call for International Assistance
Rubio urged other nations to step forward and support the rebuilding of Gaza, though he did not clarify whether Palestinians would be able to return under President Donald Trump’s proposal to develop the Gaza Strip.
The US official’s remarks have sparked debates over long-term solutions for displaced Palestinians, with concerns rising over their temporary relocation and eventual return.
Trump’s Gaza Development Proposal
Former US President Donald Trump has proposed a plan to take over and develop Gaza, although specifics regarding Palestinian resettlement remain unclear. Rubio defended Trump’s stance, reiterating that reconstruction must happen before Gaza can be livable again.
Uncertain Future for Displaced Residents
The future of Gaza’s displaced residents remains uncertain as discussions continue over who will lead the reconstruction efforts and how long temporary relocations will last. With growing humanitarian concerns, global leaders are under pressure to find a sustainable solution.
