An Israeli airstrike targeted a tent on Thursday in Gaza Strip’s Muwasi zone, killing at least 10 people, among them three children and two police chiefs of the Hamas movement. The strike was on an area in Gaza with displaced people that have been taken refuge in the tents due to the harsh winter condition. The killed included three women, four men, Maj. Gen. Mahmoud Salah and Brig. Gen. Hossam Shahwan, who were police chiefs of Hamas, based on local records from the hospitals.
There has been no immediate comment from Israel’s military over the strike. The Muwasi area is considered an Israeli-declared humanitarian zone, and many displaced Palestinians have been taking shelter there amid the ongoing conflict.
The deadly airstrike comes at a time when violence has ravaged Gaza. For months, the lack of police on the streets has worsened the already catastrophic humanitarian situation, hindering aid efforts. While Hamas police forces have been decimated by Israeli attacks, plainclothes security personnel are still active in Gaza.
The war between Israel and Hamas, which started after the latter attacked Israel on October 7, has been causing tragic casualties on both sides. According to local health officials, more than 45,000 Palestinians, most of whom are women and children, have died due to Israel’s airstrikes and offensive operations.
