Oppo’s flagship watch is here and I must say just, like its smartphones, the watch is also fully loaded with features and is quite an eye-catcher. Oppo Watch comes with Google Wear OS operating system. Being the first there are a few misses, but a lot to like as well.

DESIGN

In the design department, it seems like not much thought has been given. The watch is a clone of the Apple Watch. From the box design to its silicone straps and rectangle display with curved edges. The watch is made from a mix of aluminium and reinforced glass, with a ceramic back where the heart-rate sensors are located. AMOLED (active-matrix organic light-emitting diode) display that’s responsive and easily readable in sunny weather. The straps, meanwhile, are crafted either from rubber or calfskin. All in all, the design looks great but is not original. PERFORMANCE

Oppo Watch comes with two chips: The Snapdragon Wear 3100 chipset and a secondary Ambiq Micro Apollo 3 processor that takes over during the low-power tasks and allows for extended (potentially 21-day) battery life. Although the Wear 3100 is a two-year-old smartwatch chip from Qualcomm, the watch functioned seamlessly and offered a smooth experience. This is backed up by 1GB of RAM and 8GB of built-in storage to load music.

HEALTH TRACKING

The smartwatch comes with five different workout routines: Fitness run, fat burn run, outdoor walk, outdoor cycling and swimming. Here it misses out as the competitors have multiple activity options. One of its cool features is a 5-minute workout with guidance by an instructor. The workout is well-designed and easy. This can come handy for a lot of people. But the lack of any outdoor activity might pinch a few.

 BATTERY LIFE

The battery is an integral part of any smartwatch. The 41 mm watch comes with a 300 mAh battery and the 46 mm with 430 mAh battery. Although they claim 30 hours of battery, it worked best up to 17 hours for me. It does come with some tools to help extend battery life. According to Oppo, you can get up to 21 days of use by switching on the power saver mode. This restricts many functions of the watch, but you’ll still have access to the basics such as step count, heart rate functions and alerts for incoming notifications.

SLEEP TRACKING

Sleep tracking is another particularly crucial feature now in a smartwatch. With this watch, after waking up it lets you know how you slept, thereby helping you monitor your sleep better. The Oppo Watch also has an always-on optical heart rate tracker providing continuous heart rate data during the entire day. You can view all the health and fitness data from the Oppo Watch on the HeyTap Health mobile app from the brand, available on the Google Play store. It syncs steps, sleep data, heart rate, workouts, and daily activity.

VERDICT

Oppo Watch is priced at Rs 14,990. Smartwatches are no longer a luxury product. With the growing craze towards health and fitness, everyone wants one. The market is large and still, the options are few. Thus, it has a good chance to excel. The watch does miss out on multiple exercise modes and I find the design, looking like an Apple watch, a bit cliché. But then you do get sleep tracking, cellular connectivity, e-sim support and fun 5-minute workout suggestions. If the price doesn’t pinch your pocket much, then the Oppo Watch can be an easy choice for someone looking for a smartwatch with rectangular dial and doesn’t want to spend on an Apple watch.
