The probe goes on in the death of 22-year-old engineer Udit Gayake, whose family claims he was brutally beaten like an animal by two cops in Bhopal last week.
Udit’s father, Rajkumar Gayake, works as an engineer with the Madhya Pradesh Electricity Board. He spoke to his son for the last time on Thursday evening. When Rajkumar asked where he was going, Udit said he was going out for some college work. “I told him, okay, come back soon,” Rajkumar recalled while speaking to The India Express.
What Rajkumar did not know was that Udit had received a job offer from an IT company in Bengaluru. He was actually going to meet his friends to celebrate a celebration that sadly became his last.
Later, a few hours later, a frantic call was received by Rajkumar from Bengaluru. "Go to AIIMS (Bhopal), uncle," Udit's friend told him. When he went there, he saw the body of his son with wounds on the head, shoulder, back, groin, and eye. "He was killed like an animal," said the father.
Bhopal's CCTV video footage of Piplani area was purportedly seen dancing with friends, rushing into a lane, and being hit with a stick by a policeman. In the wake of the video release, constables Santosh Bamaniya and Saurabh Arya were booked for murder, arrested, and remanded to 14-day judicial custody.
A national president of youth congress Uday Bhanu Chib has shared a video on X showing the alleged clash.
Udit was a BTech student of Computer Science and Cyber Security at VIT Bhopal. He was the youngest from a family of engineers and teachers. His uncle K.K. Gayake explained, "Why should we behave rudely with anyone, especially the police? We keep heads down, stay out of trouble, and grow. That's our culture."
The shocking incident was reported late Thursday evening in Indrapuri, Bhopal. While he was returning from a party, Udit was halted by police at about 1:30 am. Scared, he entered a dark lane where two policemen chased and apprehended him.
His friend mentioned, "Udit just asked us in the car to turn on the AC and give him water. He did not mention any pain. He vomited for two to three times… His hand went cold. We attempted to look for a pulse, but we couldn't find one. We rushed him directly to AIIMS." He was declared dead upon arrival.
Rajkumar was outraged, stating, "All our children were fine… We were going to celebrate Diwali together. Now, my wife is hardly conscious, my two daughters are shattered, and I don't get it why the police would treat my son like a very tough criminal?"
He continued, "He was a baccha (child). They could have just slapped him once and left him."
The postmortem report confirmed that Udit had a ruptured pancreas and several internal injuries, asserting the cruel nature of the attack.
Udit's family demanded a CBI or SIT investigation to assure a fair and impartial inquiry, reiterating the demand for justice for the young engineer.
