A 24-year-old woman from Telangana’s Jangaon district, Sahaja Reddy Udumala, tragically lost her life in a house fire in Albany, New York, on Thursday. She died in a house fire at her home in Albany, New York, on December 4, 2025. Officials reported that the fire broke out while she was asleep, leaving her no chance to escape.

Who was Sahaja Reddy Udumala?

Sahaja Reddy Udumala, was 24 years old. Shw was from Telangana’s Jangaon district. She worked as a cyber-security professional. She earned her Master’s degree in Cybersecurity. Sahaja was remembered as an intelligent and hardworking student with a bright future ahead.  She moved to the United States in 2021 to pursue her higher studies. She was working in Albany before the tragedy.

Sahaja’s parents live in India. Her father is an IT professional and her mother a school teacher.

What Happened to Sahaja Reddy Udumala?

The fire erupted in a building on Western Avenue in Albany. Firefighters and emergency responders found the residence fully engulfed in flames. Several people were rescued and taken to the hospital with serious injuries. Despite medical efforts, Sahaja, who suffered severe burns, died after about 15 hours of treatment. According to relatives, nearly 90% of her body was burned, and she ultimately succumbed to multiple organ failure.

Fire Originated in Neighbouring Building, Spread Rapidly

Initial information suggests the fire began in a neighbouring building and quickly spread to Sahaja’s residence. The fire spread so fast that residents had very little time to react, a factor that tragically contributed to her death.

Sahaja got Severe Injuries Confirmed by Indian Consulate

The Indian Consulate in New York confirmed that Sahaja suffered severe burn injuries and later died. The consulate expressed deep sorrow over her untimely death and extended heartfelt condolences to her family.

Consulate Expresses Condolences, Offers Assistance

In a public message, the Consulate stated it was “deeply saddened by the untimely demise of Ms. Sahaja Reddy Udumala.” It also confirmed that it is in contact with her family and is providing all possible support, including assistance with the repatriation of her remains.

Family Devastated, Seeks Repatriation of Sahaja’s Body

Sahaja was the elder daughter of a father who works in the software industry and a mother who is a teacher. Her family, who had hoped for her safe return after her studies, is now dealing with immense grief and is seeking help from authorities to bring her body back to India for her final rites.

Hometown Residents Rally Around Grieving Family

Her community in Telangana has come together to support the family during this difficult time, offering emotional support as they cope with their heartbreaking loss.

GoFundMe Launched to Support Funeral and Repatriation Expenses

To help the family manage funeral, memorial, and repatriation expenses, along with other urgent needs, Sahaja’s cousin started an online fundraiser. The campaign notes that she suffered burn injuries on nearly 90% of her body. The funds will also assist the family during this emotionally and financially tough time.
