A shocking crime has come to light in Panipat, Haryana, where a 32-year-old woman allegedly murdered three young girls over the last two years because she disliked children she found “beautiful”. Police say the accused, identified as Poonam, even killed her own three-year-old son to keep suspicion away from herself.
Panipat Superintendent of Police (SP) Bhupender Singh said the woman shows clear signs of being a psychopath and openly told investigators that she felt threatened by girls she considered prettier than her. The SP explained that Poonam held deep resentment towards children she thought looked good. “Jo sundar bachhiye hain unse inko nafrat si hai,” he said.
According to him, she admitted that whenever she saw a pretty girl, she felt jealous and feared the child might grow up to surpass her in beauty. The SP quoted her saying: “usko chidd machti hai kahi bade hokar issay sundar na ban jaye”. He added that her behaviour reportedly worsened after marriage. “After her marriage, she indulged in such things. She appears to be a psycho type. She is not very educated,” Singh said.

Police officers said Poonam used the same method every time: she drowned the children in tubs or water tanks, making the deaths look like accidents so her involvement would not be suspected.
Details of the Three Killings
• First killing (2023):
Poonam allegedly drowned her sister-in-law’s nine-year-old daughter in a water tank at the family home in Bhawar village, Sonipat.
Worried that relatives would blame her, she then killed her own 3-year-old son, Shubham, to avoid suspicion.
• Second killing (August 2025):
She allegedly murdered her cousin’s six-year-old daughter in Sewah village using the same method—drowning the child in a water tank.
• Third killing (recent incident):
Her most recent victim was her six-year-old niece. Police say she killed the girl during a family wedding by pushing her head into a water-filled tub kept in a storeroom.
This incident triggered a detailed investigation, eventually uncovering the pattern of her crimes.
Arrest and Investigation of Poonam
Police arrested Poonam after questioning her in connection with the latest death. During interrogation, she reportedly revealed how jealousy and insecurity drove her actions. Investigators say her behaviour and statements point towards severe psychological issues.
