A study has found that horror movies can burn calories by raising heart rate and metabolism in a rapid way. Conducted by researchers at the University of Westminster and funded by movie rental firm Lovefilm, the study observed ten participants as they watched ten different horror films while their heart rate, oxygen intake, and carbon dioxide output were monitored.

Can a 90-Minute Horror Film Burn an Average of 150 Calories?

Results revealed that a 90-minute horror film can burn an average of 150 calories, which is considered the same as going for a 30-minute walk. However, the number varies depending on the film and personal reaction.

The top three films in terms of calorie burn were The Shining with 184 calories, Jaws with 161 calories, and The Exorcist with 158 calories, each featuring numerous jump-scare moments, which create spikes in adrenaline and heart rates.

Dr. Richard Mackenzie, a senior lecturer in cell metabolism and physiology at the University of Westminster, said that brief moments of extreme stress from fear release quick-acting adrenaline. This can suppress appetite, raise the basal metabolic rate, and increase calories burned.

Rather, the study points out how interesting the effects of fear and excitement are in the human body.
