Watch: Chinese Doctor Performs Lung Tumor Surgery 5,000 km Away

In a groundbreaking medical achievement, a doctor in China has successfully performed surgery on a patient located 5,000 kilometers away using advanced technology. On July 13, surgeons from Shanghai Chest Hospital conducted a remote lung tumor removal procedure, marking a significant milestone in medical technology and innovation.

The surgery, which was conducted using state-of-the-art robotic equipment based in Shanghai, involved Dr. Luo Qingquan, the chief surgeon, who operated the robotic system from his office while the patient was in Kashgar, on the opposite side of China. The entire procedure was completed in just one hour.

The lung tumor surgery has captured global attention, with a video of the operation circulating widely on social media. Shared on X (formerly Twitter) on August 2, the video has amassed over 1.5 million views. The post highlighted the groundbreaking nature of the procedure, noting that it was accomplished with a domestically-made surgical robot and extensive clinical research.

Commenters on social media expressed their awe at the technological advancements in medicine. One user remarked, “Remote robotic minimal access surgery is the future trend. Medical science has progressed so much, yet there is still so much to learn about the human body.” Another described the remote surgical feat as a “medical miracle,” emphasizing the progress of robotic surgery.

The Shanghai municipal information office confirmed that the surgery was performed using cutting-edge technology and detailed clinical research. Dr. Luo Qingquan and his team demonstrated the clinical capabilities of domestically developed surgical robots, potentially offering significant benefits to patients in remote or underserved areas.

Dr. Luo highlighted that this achievement represents a major step forward in the field of remote surgery. “This success showcases the potential of domestically-built surgical robots to improve patient care, especially for those in remote and rural locations,” he said. The operation not only underscores China’s growing prowess in medical technology but also paves the way for future advancements in remote healthcare
