Greening the IIFAs: The Story Behind the Green Carpet

The past 16 years, the IIFA Awards has always sported the bright green carpet instead of the red one, a decision since 2007 when it took place at Sheffield, UK. The green carpet was worn as part of “Greening The IIFAs” in a bid to create environmental awareness and bring to the fore the need to address the issue of climate change. As the organizers would clarify, this was done in a bid to exploit their influence as celebrities for the purpose of propagating a message concerning sustainability to the rest of the world.

Further to differentiate the touring Bollywood event as it gained its international recognition, a green carpet was added. The IIFA Awards, since their launch in 2000, have become a prominent annual spectacle that have their host countries increase in popularity and fame while at the same time upping the popularity of Bollywood. Change in carpet is part of an evolutionary move of the event to add social and environmental causes to its canvas apart from being a mere entertainment feature.
