A video clip from California of an LGBTQ couple getting married in traditional Hindu ceremonies has taken over on social media. The online video features 2 women named Tiya and Carol walking down the lane in lehengas, each of them with their parents. They exchanged garlands, finished pheras, and done weeding puja rituals, then took blessings from elders by touching feet. The video ends with the couple dancing at their wedding reception. Some complimented them, asserting there was nothing wrong with their wedding. Others condemned them for making fun of Hindu traditions in a same-sex wedding.

California couple’s viral Hindu traditional marriage

The video was posted on X and came with the note, “I’m all for same-sex marriage, but I’m yet to see a nikah done between 2 women or 2 men. Why do Hindu traditional values need to be bent for it? Just do a court marriage and move on. This is just mocking.”

Internet Reactions From Social Media Users

Responding to the post, one user penned, “Marriage can only be for a male and a female. The term MARRIAGE is only for a binding union between two different genders. This foolishness has never occurred in the last few thousand years. I call it good friendship or whatever, but certainly not marriage.”

Another common one is, “What’s wrong with this? They are just following Hindu traditions to marry. If you don’t like it, then they will follow other religions’ traditions. Is that what you want?”

“Disgusting. Keep marriage sacred, not a rainbow remix,” a post read.

Someone said, “This is just people living their lives.”

Another individual stated, “There is no same-gender marriage. It’s just a drama or hype created in order to show off or influence the youth’s minds. Usually, a brainwashed individual does that kind of thing.”

Another humorously asked, “BTW, who files a fake dowry case on whom and claims alimony if divorced?”

What About Same-Sex Marriage in India?

At the beginning of the 2023 hearings, it seemed India could become the first country in the world to legalize same-sex marriage. But the dreams of many LGBTQ+ couples were shattered when the Supreme Court dismissed the petition. The court did consent to set up a committee that will bestow greater legal rights and entitlements upon such couples.
