A recent social media video that went viral online in which Mohammad Idrish, dressed as a Brahmin, eats purportedly non-vegetarian food during Navratri. The video was soon trending, and there was huge debate and controversy online, with most questioning its genuineness and purpose. Fact-checkers have thus looked into the allegations to shed light on whether the video was true or false.
During the current Navratri festivities, a video was shared on social media in which a man is seen wearing Bhagwa-colored clothes, with a tilak mark on his forehead and a saffron gamcha over his shoulders. In the video, he is reportedly consuming non-vegetarian food and trying to escape when he is caught on camera. But all of these allegations are untrue.
The captured video was posted on X with the comment, "Mohammad Idrish, all dressed up as a Brahmin, made a viral video consuming non-veg on Navratri." He's arrested now. Reveals how low individuals can stoop to malign & ridicule Hindus.
According to Newsmeter, a reverse image search of an important frame from the video led the clip back to tweets posted by some X (formerly Twitter) users on September 24. The search also attested that the video is scripted and stars Mahesh Upreti, a Nepali comedian and artist, instead of Mohammad Idrish or anyone else depicting a Pandit.
While other viewers accepted the video at face value and condemned the man for allegedly insulting Brahmins, others called for restraint, speculating that the clip might be staged or misleading. The dichotomous reaction on social media illustrated how rapidly misinformation travels, with some jumping emotionally to conclusions at what they felt was an insult to religious feelings, whereas fact-checkers and more cynical observers insisted that one should check the content before making a judgment.
