An Indian professional working remotely for a US-based company recently shared a sudden layoff experience on Reddit that quickly went viral online. The employee, along with many colleagues in India, was dismissed during a short four-minute virtual meeting with the company’s Chief Operating Officer (COO), without any prior warning.
“It was a normal workday. I logged in at 9 a.m. and saw a calendar invite for a mandatory meeting at 11 a.m. with the COO. When the call began, he disabled all cameras and microphones and announced that most of the Indian workforce was being let go,” the employee wrote. The COO clarified that the layoffs were part of an internal restructuring process and were not performance-related.
Lack of Communication and Support Leaves Employees Stunned
What left employees most shocked was the absence of proper communication or support. The COO refused to answer questions and exited the call shortly after delivering the news. Affected employees were informed they would receive an email confirming if they were included in the layoff.
Despite the abrupt termination, the company promised to pay October’s full salary and encash any pending leaves. However, the employee admitted the emotional impact was significant, stating, “This is the first time I’ve been laid off, and it just truly sucks.”
Social Media Outpouring: Support and Job Leads
The Reddit post has generated sympathy across social media, with many users offering help, guidance, and career support. One commenter said, “Which profile are you in? If I can help you, do DM.” Another added, “Bro, what is your role and experience? Please DM me, I might be able to help you.”
Others encouraged the laid-off employee to see this as an opportunity for personal and professional growth. “Take this opportunity to reflect on what you truly want to do next. It could be what you’ve been doing or something entirely new. Don’t be discouraged – you’ll come out stronger because of this. Reach out to your network or start building new connections that can lead you to your next role,” one user advised.
