In an unusual twist, a perfectly spherical egg has fetched an astonishing £200 (approximately Rs 21,000) at an auction in the UK. This egg, which defies the typical oval shape of an egg, was sold for a significant sum due to its unique shape. Initially purchased for £150 (Rs 16,163) by Ed Pownell, the egg caught his attention during a visit to a local pub in Lambourn, Berkshire. ‘

The rare egg was then donated to the Iuventas Foundation, a charity dedicated to providing mental health support for young people in Oxfordshire, who organised the auction to raise funds for their cause.

A Bizarre Find with a Heartwarming Cause

The egg, believed to be a “one-in-a-billion” find, was originally discovered in a box from a local supermarket in Ayr, Scotland. Its rarity comes from its perfect spherical shape, which sets it apart from the usual oval eggs commonly found in supermarkets. According to the auction house, Thomas Roddick Callan, round eggs of this nature are extraordinarily rare. The funds raised from the auction will help support young individuals aged 13-25 who are struggling with mental health issues. Roz Rapp from the Iuventas Foundation expressed their excitement about the sale, emphasising the significance of the funds in reaching more youths in need of mental health services.

The Egg’s Journey to Auction

Ed Pownell, having purchased the egg on a whim, went to great lengths to preserve its shape by carefully removing the contents to keep the shell intact. He humorously reflected on the purchase, saying, “It’s quite fun…I think for £150 (Rs 16,163), it’s been money well spent.” The auction sale allows the Iuventas Foundation to continue its important work, expanding its outreach to young people who face long waiting lists for mental health support.
