Two 17-year-old boys sparked outrage in China after a video of them urinating in a hotpot at the popular chain Haidilao went viral on social media. Hotpot is a communal dining experience where diners cook food in a simmering pot at the table.
The video, taken in late February, depicts one boy standing on the table and urinating into the stew while eating in a private room, with the other giggling behind the camera. The incident did not come to the attention of the restaurant until after the video went viral online, triggering public outcry.

In turn, Haidilao apologized and provided compensation to at least 4,000 diners who ate at the restaurant from February 24 to March 8, including cash refunds tenfold the amount charged. "We fully realize that the inconvenience brought to our customers by this incident cannot in any way be completely offset, but we will do everything we can to take responsibility," said the company.
At first, Haidilao did not act against the teenagers, hoping that they would learn from their wrongdoing. But after online criticism, the company lodged a police complaint in Jianyang, Sichuan province, where the branch is situated, and the boys were arrested. Haidilao also replaced all the hotpot gear and utensils and sterilized other crockery. Customers use their own hotpot gear, and broths are not served again to other customers, preventing any spread of contamination to other diners.
