Twitter has announced that it will begin adding additional warning labels to tweets that violate its “Hateful Conduct” guidelines. The Mashable website states that tweets with this designation will have “limited visibility” on the platform, which denotes that Twitter’s algorithm will limit the content’s potential to be found via search or discovered through recommendations, so reducing its reach and the number of people who view it.
Twitter emphasised that accounts that tweet nasty content will not be penalised in any way; the limited visibility will only apply to the specific offending tweets. Users will be able to submit appeals, the company stated, if they think Twitter incorrectly labelled their tweet. Additionally, Twitter stated that it would “continue to remove illegal content and suspend bad actors” from the site.
Twitter is letting users know that a tweet has had visibility limited for breaking the company’s “Hateful Conduct” policies as a new step towards more transparency on the platform. Twitter’s policies define hateful conduct as racist or sexist slurs, tropes, and intimidation, as well as hateful references, imagery, and incitement.
