A brain surgeon was arrested and is now facing a criminal trial because allegedly she had allowed her 12-year-old daughter to drill a hole in her patient’s skull during operation.

In a shocking incident, inside the Graz Regional Hospital in Graz, Austria, reportedly a surgeon asked her daughter to drill his patient’s skull on January 2024. As Per reports, a brain surgeon reportedly let her young daughter into the operating room and allowed her to drill a hole into a patient’s skull for a medical probe.

12-Year-Old Allegedly Drills Hole in Patient’s Skull

The 33-year-old patient, a farmer, had been badly injured in a severe accident and admitted for an operation. Two physicians a senior doctor and a trainee neurosurgeon performed the surgery.

The surgeon, the indictment charges, permitted her 12-year-old daughter to drill a hole into the patient’s skull late in the procedure. She allegedly showed off to nurses after the operation that her daughter had “just finished her first gynecological hysterectomy.” The case was revealed after reports were lodged anonymously to authorities, and this led an official investigation.

The Surgeon’s Defense

The brain surgeon flatly denies the charge, saying that her own words to the nurses alone in the operating room were a fabrication bred of her “bloody stupid maternal pride.” She testified that her “worst mistake was sending her to the operating table.”

But her junior colleague who performed the surgery alongside her testified that the girl did assist him in drilling the hole, although he insisted he was “in control of the instrument at all times” while they worked.

Prosecutor Denounces the Incident

Prosecutor Julia Steiner labeled the incident as revealing “incredible disrespect towards the patient.” She questioned the safety hazards, posing the question, “What would have occurred if the drill was faulty and did not stop automatically on breaching the skull bone?” She clarified that the threat to the patient cannot be minimized.

Public and Legal Consequences

The case has caused uproar both in Austria and around the world, raising serious medical and ethical concerns regarding the safety of patients, professional ethics, and parental boundaries within medical environments. The trial is currently underway, with the surgeon having criminal charges brought against her regarding the incident.
