A Natural Wonder China boasts numerous lovely landscapes, rivers, valleys, and peaceful environments. Among them, one river has amazed visitors and scientists all around the world due to its unique color. It is sometimes referred to as the “Milk River” because its water looks milky white in color rather than clear blue.

Why is it referred to as the Milk River?

Rivers normally look blue, green, or brown due to the soil and vegetation around them. The Milk River in China, however, resembles a river into which someone has endlessly poured huge amounts of milk. The water turns white and cloudy. The unusual color is not the result of pollution but of natural rocks and minerals that are found in the whole region. Scientists described years ago how the river runs through areas that are abundant in limestone and calcium carbonate. When rainwater or melting snow gets in touch with these minerals, they dissolve and break down in the river water, and the color of the river water gets changed. It is the same process as when chalk powder is blended with water.
