An old video went viral online where 22-year-old skydiver Christopher Jones was seen to have a seizure and lose consciousness mid-air. ABC News said that Jones, who was on training to be a skydiving instructor, was doing a routine dive from 12,000 feet above Western Australia when the incident occurred. Although Jones has epilepsy, he thought that it was in control at the time.
He lost consciousness while in the freefall at 9,000 feet and continued for 30 seconds plummeting down at 124 miles per hour with convulsions in his body. As Jones drifted further away from his instructor, Sheldon McFarlane, McFarlane quickly reacted and reached Jones when he was at 4,000 feet. He pulled Jones’ ripcord just in time for the parachute to release. Around 3,000 feet, Jones again came around. For him, the experience was just a moment of: “Then the next thing I know I wake up at 3,000 feet, thankfully underneath a fully inflated parachute. He’s a hero. He’s a massive hero.”
The accident occurred in 2015 when Jones was at stage five of the Accelerated Free Fall program. Jones then uploaded the clip to YouTube, and it has racked up over 20 million views. McFarlane had said Jones had the required medical records, and if he hadn’t acted fast enough, an automatic system would have opened the parachute.
The video recently surfaced on X (formerly Twitter), where it had more than 83,000 views and triggered an online discussion.
