Singapore Diplomat Criticizes Gurugram Cafe For Serving ‘Tasteless Chai’ In Viral Post

Singapore’s High Commissioner to India, Simon Wong, voiced his disappointment on X regarding a cup of “flavorless” chai he sampled at a cafe in Gurugram. He recounted his experience, pointing out that he paid Rs 169 (including tax) for the beverage and found it to lack flavor.

With two images attached—a kulhad (clay cup) and the cafe’s interior—Wong stated, “The unthinkable occurred. I just had a cup of flavorless #Chai in Gurgaon. Rs 169 with tax. HC Wong. ”

Social media buzzed with various responses after Wong shared his candid review. Most users invited him to their residences to try their homemade chai. Wong responded, “The real charm of India lies in her people. I am touched by the flood of invitations to enjoy a cup of the finest homemade chai. I sincerely appreciate you all. HC Wong. ”

After the wave of suggestions, one user recommended Wong visit a street stall for a more authentic experience, adding, “Street-side tea stalls near offices provide the finest taste at a small fraction of the cost. ” Another user urged him to sample their local tea, stating, “You’ll savor a strong, authentic desi chai for merely Rs 25, without any extravagant presentation. ”

This incident underscores the deep connection Indians have with their chai culture, wherein a cup of tea represents much more than just a beverage.
