A wedding ceremony video has sparked an outcry as it appears to make eye-watering dowries of Rs 2.56 crore, among much else in cash, while marrying the daughter off at these different rituals. The footage surfaced after reportedly being filmed near a resort on Meerut-Delhi-Dehradun Highway was shared widely on social media sites.
The video, which has gone highly viral, captures the shocking moment when Rs 2.56 crore in cash is handed over as dowry to the bride in a suitcase. This amount, being distributed during the marriage ceremony itself, has sparked much controversy. Dowry, while legally prohibited, is very much a contentious issue among many parts of India.
Besides the shocking dowry, another ritual payment gained people’s attention. As for the video, a payment of Rs 11 lakh is made as part of a playful “shoe-snatching” tradition that allows the bride’s team to take the groom’s shoes, which he has to purchase back for a fixed price. Many people, including those who took part in the exchange, were shocked by the scale of the payment, and it has fuelled the conversation around dowry practices in modern society.
As the video went viral all over social media, it soon became a subject of polar opinions. Some viewers condemned the ridiculous sums, saying that such things just perpetuate outdated societal norms that are harmful. While others took a more lenient view, considering the affair as a personal choice matter of the families involved.
The controversy surrounding the video has reignited discussions about whether dowry practices, though illegal, are still practiced and considered somewhat unethical. It has, in addition, raised questions related to societal pressures that continue influencing traditional wedding customs.
This has generated a stormy conversation on social networking sites where users have made their opinions known and worried over the expenditure of huge amounts in dowry and other ceremonies. Even some requested that people be more enlightened about how dowry is injurious to social growth.
The video appears to have hit the right nerve as it seems to depict the intricacies and paradoxes of Indian marriage culture today.
