A Tragic Incident Sparked an Initiative to Protect Stray Dogs

Shantanu Naidu, a Pune University graduate with a degree in Mechanical Engineering, began his career with the Tata Group as a Design Engineer. His life took a turn when he encountered a tragic scene on his way home—a stray dog lying lifeless after being hit by a vehicle. As an animal lover, Naidu was deeply moved by the incident and resolved to find a solution to prevent such accidents.

Naidu, with the help of friends, designed reflective collars for stray dogs to make them more visible to drivers at night. Their efforts paid off when they received messages the very next day, confirming that the collars had saved lives. This simple idea turned into a larger mission, but the initiative struggled due to a lack of funding.

The Life-Changing Letter to Ratan Tata

Naidu’s father, aware of Ratan Tata’s love for dogs, encouraged him to reach out to Tata for help. Hesitant at first, Naidu wrote a handwritten letter detailing his initiative. Two months later, he received a life-changing response. Tata, moved by the effort, not only praised the project but also invited Naidu to meet him.

During their first meeting, Tata expressed admiration for Naidu’s work and even took him to visit his own dogs. This marked the beginning of a deep friendship, and Tata generously funded Naidu’s venture, enabling it to expand.

From Cornell to Tata Trust: A Promising Protégé’s Journey

Shantanu Naidu left India to pursue an MBA at Cornell University but made a promise to Ratan Tata that he would return to work for the Tata Trust. True to his word, Naidu came back, and shortly after, Tata offered him a role as his assistant. Naidu, humbled and excited by the opportunity, accepted without hesitation.

Describing Tata as a mentor and a friend, Naidu affectionately refers to him as the “Millennial Dumbledore,” a name that captures Tata’s wisdom and humility. Over the years, Naidu became Tata’s trusted companion, often accompanying him in public appearances.

Entrepreneurial Spirit and Social Impact

Naidu’s project, Motopaws, which began with reflective collars for stray dogs, has now expanded to 20 cities across four countries. He is also the author of I Came Upon a Lighthouse, a book recounting his experiences with Ratan Tata. In addition, Naidu started ‘On Your Sparks,’ an initiative offering entrepreneurial advice to young people, with all proceeds going towards Motopaws.
