The Gemini AI saree trend has gone viral on social media. Users are turning their selfies into stylish portraits in chiffon sarees, with flowing hair and dreamy backgrounds. But not everyone is excited. Shantanu Naidu, who worked as manager to the late industrialist Ratan Tata, made a funny video about the trend and called it “laziness.”

What is the Gemini AI Saree Trend?

The trend began after Google DeepMind launched Nano Banana, an image-editing model in the Gemini app. It lets users change their photos into film-like portraits with sarees, jewellery, and glamorous backdrops.

Soon, social media was full of these AI saree pictures, with many enjoying the chance to look like Bollywood stars.

Shantanu Naidu: Funny Take

In an Instagram video, Shantanu Naidu joked that Indians don’t need AI to see themselves in sarees because they already own many.

“Tum log India me hai. America mein nahi hai. India! Land of the saree. Tumhare kapaat mein at least 15 saree hai. Itna lazy ho gaya tum… AI ko generate karne ko bola jo kapda tumhare kapaat mein…” he said. Shantanu Naidu added that instead of asking AI, people should just wear their real sarees and click pictures.

Shantanu Naidu: 'Saree Pehno, Photo Nikalo'

Shantanu Naidu compared the saree trend to asking AI for a picture with his dog. “The dog is right there. Just go sit next to him and take a picture!” he joked. He also told people they look more beautiful in real sarees. “Original saree mein tum aur sundar dikhta hai. Saree pehno, photo nikalo.”

Naidu explained that it would make sense if people used AI to see themselves in white wedding gowns, since most Indians don’t own one. But sarees, he said, are already in every home, so the trend makes little sense. He shared the video with a disclaimer: “Mai toh masti mai bolta hai (I just talk in jest).”

How People Reacted?

The video went viral, with many agreeing with Naidu. One user wrote, “Inner me: Finally someone said it.” Another commented, “Bro just casually spilt the truth and sipped his tea.”

AI vs Real Life

Shantanu Naidu’s joke points to a larger debate around AI. Although tools like Gemini’s Nano Banana are entertaining and imaginative, some individuals think they can cause us to lose sight of reality. An AI-generated image might not seem as authentic as wearing your actual saree, taking a real photo, and appreciating traditional design.
