Shah Rukh Khan Advocated Relentless Work Ethic: ‘Aaram Haraam Hai’

The ongoing debate over long work hours has taken a new turn following remarks made by industry leaders, including Larsen & Toubro Chairman SN Subrahmanyan and Bollywood superstar Shah Rukh Khan. Their comments have reignited the discussion around productivity, success, and personal well-being in today’s competitive work culture.

Shah Rukh Khan’s “Aaram Haraam Hai” Philosophy Resurfaces

In a 2022 interview, Shah Rukh Khan’s provocative statement, “Aaram haraam hai” (rest is a sin), has resurfaced, adding fuel to the conversation. The superstar, known for his unparalleled work ethic and dedication, emphasised that success requires relentless hard work. In his chat with Aaj Tak, Khan noted that aspiring for greatness meant sacrificing rest, and he warned against the dangers of complacency. His words have resonated with many fans and critics, fuelling the debate about the cost of success and personal sacrifices.

SN Subrahmanyan Advocates for a 90-Hour Workweek

Larsen & Toubro’s chairman, SN Subrahmanyan, has stirred further controversy by suggesting a 90-hour workweek. He questioned the need for weekends and argued that employees should continue working on Saturdays and Sundays. According to Subrahmanyan, the focus should be on productivity and maximising work time rather than taking frequent breaks. His comments echo the thoughts of other industry leaders, including Infosys co-founder Narayana Murthy, who also advocated for longer work hours, admitting his regret over not pushing employees harder during their early years.

Anand Mahindra and Adar Poonawalla Weigh In

In contrast, Mahindra Group Chairman Anand Mahindra offered a more balanced perspective on work-life integration. He emphasized the importance of personal time, stating that holistic living is key to sound business decisions. Mahindra’s lighthearted remark about spending quality time with his wife sparked a humorous response from Serum Institute of India CEO Adar Poonawalla, who agreed with Mahindra’s stance, adding that his wife also enjoys their Sundays together.

The debate surrounding long work hours and work-life balance has divided business leaders, with some pushing for extended hours to boost productivity and others advocating for a more well-rounded approach. As the conversation continues, the importance of maintaining personal time and well-being in a fast-paced world remains at the forefront of the discussion.

Balancing Work and Life: The Ongoing Discussion

With industry leaders offering contrasting viewpoints, the question of work-life balance continues to evolve. The debate touches upon the delicate balance between professional success and personal fulfilment. As work cultures shift and societal expectations grow, finding a harmonious middle ground between hard work and rest remains a challenge for many in the workforce.
