Images of Bangkok International Airport in Thailand, which is known as Suvarnabhumi Airport, or “Golden Land,” go viral on social media. It is the biggest airport in Southeast Asia.

Samudra Manthan Statue at Bangkok Airport, But Why?

A huge statue of Samudra Manthan at Bangkok Airport becomes the first attraction for tourists. The statue shows the churning of the ocean by the Devas (gods) and the Asuras (demons) to receive amrita, the nectar of immortality, where the serpent Vasuki is used as the churning rope. The whole statue is sculpted in a unique Thai style, with Lord Vishnu sitting on the serpent. While Thailand today is a predominantly Buddhist nation, it was originally shaped by Hinduism.

Traditions and rituals in Thailand still have Hindu roots, and Sanskrit was commonly spoken here. Suvarnabhumi Airport was named by the late King Bhumibol in honor of Lord Vishnu, and the presence of the deity can be seen throughout the airport. The airport itself has a huge Garuda statue representing Vishnu’s divine mount and also exhibits of Indian and Buddhist cultural symbols.

Likewise, near the international airport in Bali, Indonesia, tourists can view a giant Garuda carrying Lord Vishnu on the side of a building. Malaysia, Indonesia, Maldives, Cambodia, and Thailand were all once Hindu culture centers prior to Buddhism or Islam dominating these countries. Hindu temples, iconography, and cultural effects still predominate, however, due to the long-lasting effect of Hinduism in these nations. The visibility of these statues and cultural symbols in airports and public areas speaks well to the profound historical and religious ties these Southeast Asian nations retain with Hindu culture.
