The adventure trip of a young man to Rishikesh turned terrifying after he took a bungee jump that went horribly wrong. A video of the incident has gone viral, triggering an intense debate over adventure sports safety.
The incident took place at the Thrill Factory adventure park, from where the 24-year-old student, Sonu Kumar of Gurugram, took the leap of 180 feet. Instead of an exciting bounce, the safety cord that held him snapped tragically midway in the air.
The shocking CCTV footage captures the moment when the rope failed and sent Sonu hurtling toward the ground, where he crashed onto a tin shed below the jumping platform.

The brutal fall caused severe injuries to Sonu Kumar. He was admitted to AIIMS Rishikesh, where the doctors diagnosed him with major fractures of his chest and left arm. Though initially stated to be in a critical condition, he is reportedly now stable.

What is Bungee Jumping?
Bungee jumping is an extreme recreational sport where a person leaps from a significant height, such as a bridge, crane, or cliff, while secured by a large elastic cord called a bungee cord.
The fundamental thrill comes from the feeling of free-fall before the cord stretches taut, arresting the downward motion and then snapping the jumper back upward.
The cord, typically fastened around the ankles or body harness, is engineered to stretch but not break, converting the force of the fall into an exhilarating series of gentle rebounds until the energy dissipates, at which point the jumper is safely lowered to the ground.

Critical Safety Measures Missing On-Site
The tragedy was made worse by reports of alleged negligence at the adventure site. One eyewitness, who taped the terrifying fall and helped rescue Sonu, recounted that no special ambulance was positioned at the Thrill Factory and no specially trained medical staff was immediately available to help.
This is why bystanders had to rush a badly injured and bleeding young man to the hospital in a private vehicle, underlining a critical lapse in emergency preparedness.
District Magistrate Nikita Khandelwal ordered an immediate inquiry into the incident. As a direct result, all activities at the Thrill Factory have been suspended until the safety probe is completed.
Furthermore, the administration has announced a district-wide safety audit for every company operating adventure sports with the intention of averting any similar catastrophic failures in the future.
The widely circulated video of the malfunction turned the spotlight on the inconsistent safety standards in India’s booming adventure tourism sector, leading to public outcry and demands for strict accountability from the operators.
