Late industrialist and philanthropist Ratan Tata, known for his humility and generosity, left behind a will that reflects his deep values. While many business tycoons focus on wealth accumulation for their families, Tata’s will stands as a testament to his selflessness—allocating significant financial support to his employees, associates, and even his beloved pet dog, Tito.
A Generous Farewell to Employees and Associates
Ratan Tata ensured that his long-serving employees and domestic staff were well taken care of. Many received financial aid, with long-term employees granted ₹15 lakh each and part-time workers receiving ₹1 lakh. His personal cook, Ranjan Shaw, was gifted ₹1 crore, while butler Subbaiah Konar received ₹66 lakh. His trusted secretary, Delnaz Gilder, was also given ₹10 lakh.
Special Provision for His Beloved Pet
Tata’s compassion extended beyond humans. He earmarked ₹12 lakh for the care of his pet German Shepherd, Tito, ensuring the dog would receive ₹30,000 every quarter for its well-being.
Support for Education and Close Associates
Demonstrating his commitment to education, Tata waived off a ₹1 crore loan taken by his young executive assistant, Shantanu Naidu, to study at Cornell University. Additionally, his neighbor, Jake Malete, benefited from a loan waiver of ₹23.7 lakh.
Family and Friends Included in His Will
Although his primary focus was on supporting employees and those in need, Tata did not overlook his family. His brother, Jimmy Tata, inherited a property worth ₹16 crore in Mumbai’s Juhu area, while his half-sisters received a third of his total wealth. Bank deposits worth ₹385 crore were distributed among family members.
Among his close friends, Mehli Mistry received a ₹6.2 crore property in Alibaug and a collection of firearms. Meanwhile, his 70% stake in the Tata Group was transferred to the Ratan Tata Endowment Foundation (RTEF) and the remaining 30% to the Ratan Tata Endowment Trust (RTET), ensuring that his philanthropic mission continues.
A Simple and Humble Farewell
Despite his enormous wealth, Ratan Tata chose simplicity even in death. He allocated only ₹2500 for his funeral, proving that his priority was never material possessions but the well-being of people. His will is a reflection of his lifelong principles—compassion, humility, and an unwavering commitment to uplifting others.
