The Busselton Jetty in Western Australia, already a popular destination for sea enthusiasts, treated its patrons to a memorable present over the last weekend. This popular landmark, renowned as the longest wooden jetty in the Southern Hemisphere, became a platform for a most unique wildlife experience: the unprecedented sighting of a pygmy blue whale.

Mostly, individuals go to the jetty to walk, appreciate the expansive ocean views, and spend a peaceful day near the sea. This weekend, though, all attention was turned toward the deep blue, as locals and tourists gazed in awe as a genuinely huge creature swam elegantly near the wooden pier.

Stunning video of the whale rapidly spread, engaging audiences worldwide. It’s a stunning sight that few individuals ever have the opportunity to see in person: a giant of the sea swimming peacefully by an artificial structure.

Welcome the Pygmy Blue Whale

To get an idea of how rare this occurrence is, here is some more information about this incredible creature. The pygmy blue whale is a unique Australian subspecies of the blue whale, the largest creature on the planet. It was only scientifically determined as a distinct entity in 1966, residing mainly in the Indian Ocean and the Southwest Pacific.

Though called “pygmy” because they’re a bit shorter than the “true” blue whale, their name’s not quite accurate. There’s nothing little about them! The largest among the true blue whales measure around 30 meters (approximately 98 feet) in length. Pygmy blue whales aren’t so far off, still growing as big as 24 meters (almost 79 feet). Picture an animal as long as three buses parked end-to-end.

A Small Menu for a Gigantic Body

Even though they are so huge, the whales are sustained by the ocean’s smallest animals. They eat krill, small shrimp-like crustaceans, for breakfast, lunch, and dinner. In order to support their gigantic bodies, they need to eat gigantic quantities of these small creatures daily.

The smooth manner in which this enormous whale glided in the ocean around the Busselton Jetty, cutting through the depths with silent strength, reminded us of the sea’s timeless mystery and power.

It was a special privilege and sight that locals and visitors will be talking about for a lifetime, leaving them in awe of the giant that visited their symbol of the iconic jetty.
