Christine McCulloch, unaware of the book’s potential future value, bought the hardback copy for her son Adam from a bookstore in Stratford-upon-Avon in 1997. It remained tucked away for decades in a cupboard beneath the stairs of their Chesterfield home.
During the 2020 lockdown, the McCullochs stumbled upon reports of first-edition sales, prompting them to verify their copy. “It was a bit of a pinch-yourself moment when we learned its worth,” Adam McCulloch shared.
The book is among only 500 hardback copies printed during the initial 1997 run, making it a sought-after collector’s item. Valued between £30,000 and £50,000, it exceeded initial expectations when the gavel fell.
Adam noted the charm of their well-loved copy, saying, “The tea stains and folded corners tell a story. It adds to the magic.”
The Harry Potter series, which was written by British author J.K. Rowling, has captivated millions across the globe. This is a seven-book series, spread over ten years, which follows the adventures of Harry Potter and his friends, Hermione Granger and Ron Weasley, at Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry.
Christine reflected on the enduring impact of her purchase: “Adam loved the book, and it sparked a fascination that so many children share today.”
The family’s decision to auction the book ensures it will continue to be cherished, not just as a literary treasure but also as a piece of magical history.
