Queen Elizabeth’s 1947 Wedding Cake Slice Sold at Auction for Rs 2.40 Lakh

A preserved slice from Queen Elizabeth II and Prince Philip’s 1947 wedding cake has been auctioned for £2,200 (about Rs 2.40 lakh). Described as a “very rare slice,” this 77-year-old piece remains in its original packaging, which includes a small box bearing the silver emblem of Princess Elizabeth. However, it is no longer edible.

The slice was gifted to Marion Polson, who served as housekeeper at the Palace of Holyroodhouse in Edinburgh, Scotland, from 1931 to 1969. Alongside the cake, Polson received a personal thank-you note from Elizabeth, expressing appreciation for a wedding gift she had sent. In her letter, Elizabeth admired the “dessert service” Polson had given, saying it would be cherished and frequently used.

Auction house Reeman Dansie, which facilitated the sale, noted that the cake slice came with its original presentation card and packaging addressed to “Miss Polson, Palace of Holyroodhouse, Edinburgh, Scotland.” The box was postmarked April 21, 1948, several months after the wedding on November 20, 1947.
