“Must Visit Jhalmuri Express Soon!”: Social Media Reacts To British Man Selling Kolkata-Style Jhalmuri In London

Kolkata’s beloved street food, jhalmuri, has crossed borders and found a place on the bustling streets of London. Celebrated for its flavorful mix of puffed rice, fresh vegetables, chutney, and aromatic spices, this Indian snack has rapidly won over locals eager to experience a taste of Kolkata’s culinary charm.

Authentic Jhalmuri in London

During a recent outing, food vlogger Ansh Rehan discovered a delightful stall named Jhalmuri Express, which captures the authentic essence of Kolkata’s traditional snack. The stall, with its Indian-style trolley stocked with steel and plastic containers, immediately caught his attention. In a captivating Instagram video, Rehan showcases the British vendor preparing jhalmuri with techniques reminiscent of Kolkata’s street vendors.

The preparation begins with the vendor pouring puffed rice (muri) into a steel vessel, followed by a generous sprinkle of fresh coriander leaves. Next, a variety of spices are added, along with freshly chopped cucumbers and onions. The vendor skillfully mixes the ingredients with a long, thin knife, ensuring each component is well blended. To enhance the flavors, a squeeze of fresh lemon juice is added, completing the vibrant mixture.

What makes this jhalmuri truly unique is the nostalgic serving method: the vendor expertly fashions a classic serving cone from old newspapers, paying homage to Indian street food traditions. A drizzle of imli chutney, along with a sprinkle of bhujia and masala, tops off the dish, delivering a burst of flavor with every bite. Rehan described it as “Kolkata style, authentic and spicy jhalmuri in London.”
