A 40-year-old man, frustrated by what he perceived as government inaction on environmental issues, climbed a high-voltage electricity pole in Shahdara’s Geeta Colony, Delhi, on Wednesday. The police were alerted around noon by a PCR call, and they rushed to the location to address the situation. The man, identified as Madhusudan Biswas, claimed he would only come down if he was allowed to meet the Prime Minister, Chief Minister, Defence Minister, and a judge.
After hours of negotiations, authorities were able to safely bring him down. According to the police, Biswas, a resident of North 24 Parganas in West Bengal, described himself as both an environmental activist and a teacher. He explained that he had sent multiple emails to various government officials, urging them to take action on environmental concerns, but had received no response. Feeling ignored, he took this drastic step in protest.
Swift action was taken by both the police and the fire department to ensure the man’s safety. Upon their arrival, the Station House Officer (SHO) of the Geeta Colony police station, along with an Emergency Response Vehicle (ERV) and local beat staff, found Biswas tied to the pole with ropes.
Rescue equipment was brought in by the fire department. After successfully convincing him to come down, Madhusudan was taken into custody for further questioning. During his interrogation, the police found inconsistencies in his statements, which raised concerns about his mental health and the validity of his claims, as noted by DCP (Shahdara) Prashant Gautam.
