A 35-year-old man from Rajasthan was detained at Jaipur airport for allegedly giving triple talaq to his wife over the phone from Kuwait, where he worked, before reportedly marrying a Pakistani woman, according to police on Wednesday.
The man, Rehman, allegedly met Mehwish, a Pakistani woman, on social media, and the two married in Saudi Arabia. Mehwish arrived in Churu, Rajasthan, last month on a tourist visa and is currently living with Rehman’s parents, officials said.
Farida Bano, 29, a resident of Bhadra in Hanumangarh, filed a complaint against her husband Rehman last month. In her FIR, she accused him of dowry harassment and divorcing her through triple talaq, a practice now banned in India.
Hanumangarh Deputy SP (SC/ST Cell) Ranveer Singh reported that Rehman, who had been working in Kuwait’s transport sector, landed at Jaipur airport on Monday, where he was detained by a police team from Hanumangarh. Following preliminary questioning, Rehman was arrested the next day.
Rehman and Farida Bano were married in 2011 and have two children together, a son and a daughter. After Mehwish’s arrival in Churu, Farida, who had been living with her parents in Hanumangarh, decided to file a case against her husband.
