Las Vegas Man Wakes Up After 6-Month Coma, Finds Shocking Hospital Bill

A man from Las Vegas, John Pennington, faced a significant life challenge when, at 30, he was involved in a severe car accident that left him in a coma. However, John’s difficulties didn’t end when he regained consciousness. According to a Reddit post he shared, he was hit with a massive $2.5 million (Rs 2,09,67,775) bill for his hospital stay, excluding the additional costs from two rehab treatments at the Nevada Community Enrichment Program.

In his Reddit account, John recounted waking up one day in 2015, believing it was time to go to work, only to find himself strapped to a hospital bed. When he asked the attending nurse if he could use the bathroom, she teared up and quickly left the room, returning a few minutes later to apologize. She then explained that he had been in a coma for six months due to a severe traumatic brain injury. The neurologist had previously stated that if John ever woke up, he wouldn’t be able to do much of anything.

To cover the expenses of his treatment, John created a GoFundMe page. When that wasn’t enough, he turned to his lawyer, who readily stepped in to help cover the costs. After all the medical bills were paid, John finally felt a sense of relief.

John also organized a Q&A session on social media to shed light on his situation. During the session, a user asked, “Was your employer surprised when you finally showed up?”

Another user responded, praising John’s employer for their incredible support. They kept his insurance active and paid for an entire year, with some of his bosses and the vice president regularly visiting him. The user added, “I couldn’t say enough amazing things about the support they gave John before and during this time. Even still today, they are one of his biggest supporters.”
